Student-friendly Running Routes in Aberdeen

Between studying and socialising, finding the time (and money) to exercise as a student can be challenging. But prioritising your health and wellbeing is hugely important. If you’re at university in Aberdeen, the good news is you can get active outdoors for free because the city boasts numerous running routes. The local parks, gardens and beaches feature paths perfect for running, from short jogs on flat pavements to longer distances on uneven terrain. Whether just starting out or a seasoned pro looking for a new challenge, find student-friendly running routes in Aberdeen suited to your skill level.

Hazlehead Park Loop, 2.72 miles

Situated on the western edge of the city, Hazlehead Park is a public green space with formal gardens, a maze and tree groves. Its paved pathways and woodland trails total approximately 1.5 miles, making it a go-to place for short jogs. If you want to increase your distance, opt for the Hazlehead Park loop. Starting at the car park on Hazlehead Avenue, this route incorporates the area surrounding the park and stretches approximately 2.72 miles. Plus, it’s suitable for all skill levels. The park also has a weekly 5k parkrun event every Saturday at 9.30am, ideal for those seeking to enhance their fitness and meet new people by joining a running club.

Aberdeen Beachfront Loop from Aberdeen, 9.77 miles

Living at our Aberdeen student accommodation puts you in proximity to Aberdeen Beach, a popular spot for runners of all abilities. Covering just under 10 miles and with an incline of 250ft, the Aberdeen Beachfront loop from the city centre is a rewarding run for those with a very good fitness level. This route starts and ends at the train station and showcases some of Aberdeen’s most picturesque places, including Donmouth Local Nature Reserve, Aberdeen Beachfront and Footdee.

Aberdeen Beachfront Loop from Pittodrie, 5.66 miles

If you’re looking for a shorter seaside running route, try the Aberdeen Beachfront loop from Pittodrie. Beginning at Regent Walk, a stone’s throw from our King Street Exchange and Linksfield House student accommodation, this course takes you through Old Aberdeen up to the River Don and along the Esplanade before finishing at Aberdeen Beachfront. Totalling 5.66 miles, the route requires a good fitness level. However, the scenic waterfront views make the challenge more than worth it.

Esplanade, 4.5 miles

Fancy starting your day with some fresh sea air? Go for a run along the Esplanade. You can cover 4.5 miles when you begin at the North Pier in Footdee, head up the Beachfront to Donmouth Nature Reserve and back down to the North Pier. Suitable for all fitness levels, this relatively flat route is ideal for practising at your own pace. Like Hazlehead Park, the Esplanade hosts an organised 5k parkrun every Saturday at 9.30am if you wish to join a running club.

River Don Paths from Seaton Park, 8 miles or less

If the Esplanade is a little too windy, go for a jog along the River Don instead. The banks feature winding paved and gravel paths, with various route options you can shorten or lengthen to suit your fitness level. The beautiful Seaton Park in Old Aberdeen makes a good start and end point. It also provides a peaceful setting for warm-up and cool-down stretches.

Loch Muick & Balmoral Estate, 2 to 7.2 miles

When a change of scene is on the cards, consider venturing out to the Balmoral Estate, nestled in the heart of the Scottish Highlands. Approximately a 90-minute drive from Aberdeen, the grounds offer multiple routes ranging from 2 to 7.2 miles to suit different fitness levels. You can cover the latter by completing a circuit around Loch Muick, a tranquil lake surrounded by the rolling hills of the Cairngorms National Park. The path is reasonably flat but rocky, making the route suitable for confident, experienced runners. Each spring, the Balmoral Estate hosts Run Balmoral, a weekend of races for those wanting to participate in competitive events.
