What To Do During University Summer Break

Few feelings are as sweet for a student as the arrival of summer. Exams finished, essays handed in, and the reward of amazing weather to enjoy your holiday. There is an endless number of fun things to do over your summer break, but it can also be a perfect moment to take stock and prepare for your future. Find out how you can make the most of your summer break below!

List of things to do over summer break:

  • Get a summer job
  • Start an internship
  • Catch up on reading
  • Learn a new skill
  • Volunteer for a good cause
  • Read up on course material
  • Go travelling

Get a summer job

The first thing you should be thinking of when summer starts – securing a summer job! As well as making you money that can help you sustain your Uni lifestyle, a summer job is a great way to keep active and make new friends. Play your cards right and you could even get a job that gives you skills for your dream job!

Start an internship

Want to get a taste of what your future career could be like? Reach out to a few companies and apply for an internship in a field you can excel in. A lot of internships are unpaid, but the experience you can get is invaluable.

You may also learn that there are a lot of things you don’t enjoy about your ideal job. Get this process of elimination out of the way, and it will be easier to apply for the right job once you’ve graduated!

Catch up on reading

When you are forced to hit the books during University, reading for your own benefit becomes a bit of a chore. Summer is a terrific opportunity to get into that book you’ve been dying to read, and lets you enjoy reading at your own pace. It also keeps your brain ticking for when you return to Uni!

Learn a new skill

If you haven’t given it much thought before, now might be the right time to brush up on your resume! Use the summer break to learn a new skill that can strengthen your job applications in the future. Why not learn how to code, pick up a new language, or start a personal blog?

Volunteer for a good cause

Is there any better use of your time than volunteering for a worthy cause? Probably not. There are loads of charities, festivals and local organisations that would welcome your support. But as a volunteer, you will also take away important skills that will make your resume really stand out.

Read up on course material

Okay, so you don’t really want to spend your summer break thinking about Uni. But if you can spare the time, getting a head start on your course material will be a big help when you go back to study mode. Who knows, you could even find some reading material you… enjoy?

Go travelling

Once you land your first grad job, you’ll really appreciate how much freedom you had in your student years. Take advantage of the carefree joys of student life by ticking countries off your bucket list. Whether you want a quick city break or a relaxing beach holiday, summer is the best time to do it!
