How to find the right flatmates at University

At some point in your uni experience, you may find yourself looking for a flatmate to move in with. This isn’t always easy – especially if you have friends that are moving elsewhere, forcing you to fill the void. Picking your flatmate is a surprisingly complicated process – for example, you might love someone as a friend, but hate the idea of living with them.

Need some help finding the flatmate of your dreams? Check out some of our tips to find the perfect flatmate.

How to find the perfect flatmate at uni:

  • Don’t rush it
  • Put a post on social media
  • Look on a student forum
  • Ask a friend of a friend
  • Meet people at clubs or societies
  • Get student accommodation at Every Student

Don’t rush it

Finding the right roommate is a process that shouldn’t be rushed. If you pick the first person you can find, chances are they might not work out in the long run. The last thing you want is to share a home with someone you can’t stand for months on end! Instead, take your time to make the right decision. Get a good sense of your potential flatmate, and make sure that you’ve hung out with them a few times. A few common interests will be a big help, but you also want to work out if they are the type of person you’d want to live with!

Put a post on social media

One of the easiest ways to find a flatmate is to make a post on social media asking for one.

This is like a Batman signal in the sky, alerting nearby students who are on the search for a new place to call home. The advantage of this is that you can outline what kind of student you are, and what kind of flatmate you’re looking for, whether it’s a specific gender or someone in a similar situation. You’ll be inundated with message requests, but you should be able to find the right kind of flatmate.

Look on a student forum

There are loads of online sites dedicated to people looking for future flatmates. For example, at The Student Room or SpareRoom, you can check out forums with people looking for new accommodation, or even looking for flatmates themselves. Depending on the location you’re living in, you could find your next flatmate (and friend!) navigating an online forum.

Ask a friend of a friend

Want a reliable way to find a flatmate you can depend on? Ask someone you trust already. This will avoid you having to bunk up with a complete stranger, and chances are that your mutuals will be similar in nature to your friends. This will also make it a lot easier to plan group activities, as your new flatmates will have friends in common. You can also ask your course mates who you get along with if they know anyone who might be looking for a new flat.

Meet people at clubs or societies

Joining a club or society is as good a way to make friends as it is to find flatmates. Here you’ll be surrounded by like-minded people who share a common interest, making it a lot easier to get along. This could be a hobby that you already enjoy, or a new sport or activity that you’ve always wanted to dabble in. With enough time spent together, you should also be able to work out if your new friend is flatmate material.
