How to balance your studies over the Christmas Break

Whether you prefer the joy of unwrapping presents or rewatching classic Christmas films, Christmas is one of the most exciting times of the year. But as a student, it’s very easy to let the spirit of Christmas distract you from that pile of work that you were assigned at the end of term.

Waking up to a pile of assignments on January 1st might make you wish you’d spent the holidays like the Grinch. So if you are struggling to balance your uni assignments with your Christmas cheer, check out some of our top tips for studying over the Christmas break:

Decide on a time of day to get your work done

Over Christmas, you may find it easy to get distracted by family visits or the obligation to help out with any decoration duties. To get around this, set a dedicated time for studying so that you and your family know exactly when you can’t be reached. For example – if you wake up early and get a lot of work done before the afternoon, you can spend the rest of the day enjoying some Christmas cheer.

Pick a good space to do your studying

Christmas can be one of the most frantic times of the year – especially if you have a big family! So to avoid the distraction of visiting relatives or shiny decorations, make sure you have the perfect space to put your head down and focus. Get yourself a dedicated study space, keep it tidy, and plug your headphones in to cut out the noise. If you can’t find somewhere to study at home, consider finding a local library!

Get all of your studying done before the big day

Nothing’s worse than going into Christmas day knowing you have a ton of assignments to complete. So in the run-up to Christmas, make a list of everything that you need to do and make sure you complete everything before this special holiday begins. It might be difficult to motivate yourself during Christmas break, but tackling any work assignments will enable you to take some days off with full confidence!

Stay in touch with your uni friends

You might be overwhelmed with activities over the busy Christmas period, but always find time to reconnect with the friends you made at uni! As well as strengthening your bonds for when you return, this will ensure you don’t go off the boil and forget about any pressing work deadlines!

Give yourself some Christmas cheer

Unless you’re a complete Scrooge, it won’t do you any good to completely starve yourself of Christmas activities. So alongside your study periods, find some time to treat yourself to something fun and festive. It could be something as simple as watching a classic Christmas film, or something more active like heading out to see the Christmas lights!
