How to Make the Most of Your Reading Week

University Reading Week

What is reading week in university? Reading week for university students is a one week break from teaching often in October time. A brilliant opportunity for a breather, as well as opportunity to get things done that you’ve been neglecting during the busy first few weeks of university. We have put together some tips on how to get the most out of your reading week!

Organise Your Week

After the first structured term of university, reading week may seem a little unstructured. Make a plan and schedule in some relaxation time and study time. Make a calendar for days you want to study, how many hours and order in terms of priority.  Think about upcoming deadlines and set yourself manageable goals that will help you feeling accomplished and prepared for the next term of university. Remember to get some books you may need from the library or second-hand student book stores. Whilst you’re planning your time, make a calendar for the next term too! Schedule in some time to organise your space at university also, with the first few weeks often being chaotic, your personal space can become a bit of a dumping ground. Rest & Relax

First and foremost, a reading week is intended to give you a breather from the sometimes intense university life. Take some time to rest both your body and mind to avoid feeling exhausted at a later stage. Catch up on sleep, eat healthily and take care of yourself. This could mean reading for fun, hitting the shops for some retail therapy, taking a trip home to see family and friends or exploring your university city.

Catch-Up on Coursework

During the first few weeks of university, it can be difficult to get into the routine of student life: balancing lectures, university work and socialising. You may need to catch up over the university reading week by catching up on readings or coursework, so you don’t have to do it during essay and exam season. Schedule this into your work plan and make it a priority of the week’s schedule.

Explore Aberdeen

There are loads of things to do in and around Aberdeen during the autumn season. Including vintage shopping, seasonal activities and lazy days in the library. With lots of free things to do in the city too! Discover our Aberdeen uni student accommodation.

Spend Time with Friends and Family

With multiple deadlines, extensive reading lists and other commitments, term time can get a little busy, spending time with friends and family becomes secondary, especially when moving to a new city to study. Plan into your week to spend time with loved ones! Whether you’re travelling home, have friends and family visiting or spending time with your flatmates. Plan a few days out, schedule a movie marathon or let loose on a night out.

Prepare for the Rest of Term

Following these tips, you should now be prepared and feeling relaxed ready for the latter half of the term. Keep up the good habits even after your reading weeks at university and allow yourself breaks between studying to keep your stress levels as low as possible. It’s also important to keep to schedules and stagger the deadlines.
